Toilet Paper Is Having A Moment
At the beginning of 2020, everyone lost their minds over toilet paper. Yes, I was one of those people. I looked into getting a bidet attachment but it didn’t fit in my cramped bathroom. Stocking up on toilet paper led me to further research this item.
According to a February 2019 report by the Natural Resources Defense Council and Stand.earth, “Much of the tissue pulp in the United States comes from the boreal forest of Canada. This vast landscape of coniferous, birch, and aspen trees contains some of the last of the world’s remaining intact forests and is home to over 600 Indigenous communities, as well as boreal caribou, pine marten, and billions of songbirds. Yet, industrial logging claims more than a million acres of boreal forest every year, equivalent to seven National Hockey League rinks each minute, in part to meet the demand for tissue products in the United States. This loss of intact boreal forest is impacting Indigenous Peoples’ ways of life. It is also driving the decline of species including boreal caribou, which, as an “indicator species,” serves as a barometer for the health of the boreal forest more broadly.” There are also health issues caused by toilet paper. The same report states, “Dioxins are persistent toxic chemicals, which means that they do not degrade easily, and they are bioaccumulative, meaning they build up in the food chain, posing a significant health risk to animals at the top of the food chain, including humans. Dioxins can cause reproductive problems, cancer, birth defects, diabetes, and allergies.”
Needless to say, all of this information was alarming.
After researching different brands, I came across Reel toilet paper. This brand is tree-free, made from 100% sustainably sourced bamboo and a mission to provide clean toilets to communities in need. This toilet paper contains no inks, no dyes, and no BPA. Reel’s website states, “Bamboo uses 30% less water than trees and it’s the fastest-growing plant on the planet. It can be harvested once a year and doesn’t need to be replanted.” You have the option to a subscription or buying one box containing 24 rolls.
I have to say I am in love with this brand and mission. Without going into too much TMI, this toilet paper is soft, comfortable and very absorbent. I don’t know about you but toilet paper is kind of personal for me. I grew up using the same brand for years and others just didn’t compare. I am glad to say that Reel toilet paper not only compares but surpassed my expectations becoming an instant household staple.
